Mom bought herself Photoshop Elements 7 as a Christmas present. She is still only just learning it. Let’s us just say that she doesn’t learn as quickly as she once did! Anyway, the other day Daisy commented that she was trying to figure out how Mom got that soft glow on some photos, without looking blurry. Mom went back and left a comment on Daisy’s blog explaining how she did it, but we thought it might make an interesting post for some of you who enjoy photography.
Mom’s newest favorite photo editing effect is The Orton Effect. <-That link is to a web site that lists the step-by-step directions to create The Orton Effect using Photoshop Elements. Another way to achieve an Orton-ish effect is a free photo-editing site Mom just loves called Picnik.com. Mom has the subscription to the Premium features but there are lots of great free features!
Evil Squirrel has been selected to illustrate three examples of the same photo.
1. The original, unedited, Un-Orten’d photo:
2. The same photo using a one-click effect from Picnik called Orton-ish:
3. The same photo using Photoshop Elements and several, slightly more complicated, but not difficult steps - The Orton Effect:
So, what do you think? Do you have a preference?
We hope you will all go try Picnik.com! It's Fun and it’s free! Free is a very good thing!
Mom has to do some work today, so we may not be able to get around much to visit, but we wish you all a very happy weekend.
Oh, and Mom said we have to thank Evil Squirrel for helping us today. So, ummm… Thanks, Evil Squirrel.

That is a cool effect!
ReplyDeleteHow interesting.
ReplyDeleteThose are cool affects! Mom has been playing with picnic some but not to post, till she learns more!
ReplyDeleteThe effect is very cool. We like all three.
ReplyDeleteI don't see why you should have to thank the evil squirrel. It didn't do anything but sit there.
ReplyDeleteHuffle Mawson
Very interesting! Thanks for sharing the knowledge!
ReplyDeleteWe like all 3 too :) Each one has some neat features .
ReplyDeleteWe like the squirrel in #2 and the colouring in #3. #1 is great!
This could be something Mom might play around with. She likes to do that too :)
Those effects are great fun. Thanks for sharing. Maybe we can make our PS Elements do cool things too. Evil Squirrel looks cheeky, today!

I actually purrfur the original furto, just because the squirrel's face is clearer. The orten-ing seems to darken the photo quite a bit, although it is an interesting effect. The last picture, especially, seems somewhat surreal, ergo more artsy. So I guess it's a matter of reality vs. art. Certainly there's a place for both in this world.
ReplyDeleteWe love Photoshop. It is a lot of fun. It's a great effect. We have saved it to give it a try:)
ReplyDeleteThat's really cool G & G. Ummmm can you think the evil squirrel by chasing him? ~S,S,C &F
ReplyDeleteVery cool! Mom sez she wishes she had the time to sit down and learn Photoshop...she doesn't learn as fast as she used to either...
ReplyDeleteNow mom is whining about not haffing photoshop again...
ReplyDeleteHmm. They all look pretty squirrely to me.
ReplyDeleteThat's very interesting! We'll go right over and try the software.
ReplyDeleteMy Mommie was real excited to try out that effect! She's already used it on a couple of photos (none that we have posted yet though). It's fun to try in Photoshop since you can adjust the amount of the effect and choose the amount of blur and lighten or darken. Thanks so much!
ReplyDeleteCool! We like the third. Mom bought PE7 too but hasn't loaded it yet... staff!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tidbits!
ReplyDeleteI'm just exploring Piknic thru Flickr. I like all 3 photos!
Oh, and Thanks, Evil Squirrel!
Hope you Gray Boys have some extra special snorgles with your Mom this weekend!luv,

Mum likes piknic too. She keeps saying she wants to get Photoshop, but if she does, she probably will never work it out. We like all three photos.
ReplyDeletewe also just got photoshop 7. We're learning it. So that means, endless shots of us, and lots of fun for mom.
ReplyDeleteI like all three of the photos. Very interesting effects, quite lovely!
ReplyDeletepurrrs to all of you
Mommy helped her Dad raise baby squirrels that fell out of their nest during hurricane hazel so she doesn't see them as evil. We do like all 3 photos for different reasons.=^Y^=the Cat Street Boyz
