September Morn... at last!

Hello, September! I've been waiting for you.

This week has been an unusual week at the office as I've been busy with lots of lovely orders. The last week of the month is usually slow as molasses. So tits to that!

My sister had to send my parents back home to me. Their summer visit came to an end yesterday. She started crying the day before. I know just how she feels. :)

To maintain a joyful family requires much from both the parents and the children. Each member of the family has to become, in a special way, the servant of the others. -Pope John Paul II

Da Boyz are trying to take over my desk again. It's a Catspiracy. And they may be winning! Just so ya know, there's a whole 'nother side of the desk that's pretty much empty.

Have a lovely day! I know I will! :P

iThoughts

You know when you come across something you recently looked for but couldn't find and so you pick it up and put it somewhere where you know you will find it the next time you go looking for it and then you need it and think you know just where it is because of what happened the last time but then it isn't?

Yeah. That.

I spent about 45 minutes looking for my spare package of night lights because the night light in the laundry room burned out. I never found them. So back on my shopping list it goes.

They'll turn up somewhere.

Just as soon as I buy the new ones.

Click on the title of the post to comment

So yesterday I discovered that posting 2 blogs posts in 1 day on my wordpress blog means that the comments on the second post will not show up... unless you click on the title of the post. Poopalooloo. I don't know why that is, just that it happened. But in the unlikely event that I should ever post twice in one day ever again and if you should have an overwhelming desire to comment on said post, just click on the title of the post. It works on other people's blogs, too. Just so ya know. ;-)

I had a pretty good day at the office yesterday and even managed to clean out the fridge, strip my bed and put on fresh linens and I did all of my laundry, except I forgot to toss in my bathroom bathmat. I'll get 'er done today. Because tomorrow my parents are coming home! Yay!

I am assuming their flights will not be postponed. Why? Because I am an optimist. That's why!

I went to Wally World after work and stocked up on a few things I know they like to have in the house. My Dad has a terrible sweet tooth and he needs milk for his coffee. My mother needs her low sodium cranberry juice and whole wheat bread. And wine. Stuff like that. :P

Since I didn't want to worry whether or not I had time to cook I was planning to make my Chicken Pie... but my sister made her Chicken Pie for them 2 days ago.  Rats! Plan B? I picked up a few of our favorite "I'm Really Lazy Today and I Don't Feel Like Cookin'  Tonight but I Want Something Yummy" Stouffer's frozen family-size dinners for them to choose from (y'all). I'm betting they choose the Chicken Cordon Bleu Pasta! I have some fresh corn on the cob to go with it, too. Yum! What's better than comfort food after a long travel day? No, this is not a paid post... we all like those Stouffer's dinners pretty good.

Calories? What calories?
Never eat more than you can lift. -Miss Piggy

And that little darling above is my Miss Gracie. That is her Special Leg sticking out. She was inspecting the underside of the drop cloth. It took her about 3 tries (each lasting approximately 10 minutes) before she would sign off on it and give her full approval!

She's nothing if not thorough. ;-)

I hope your day is lovely. Don't forget to put some YAY in it, too!

How to make the most of a hurricane, according to my 13 year old niece

Disclaimer: For optimum results it helps if you are actually a 13 year old teenager, are terribly cute and have the body of a dancer and an athlete.

Goodnight, Irene.

She came. She blew. She wreaked her havoc. She left. My family fared mostly well. There were a few felled trees, thankfully they did not land on the homes and cars. Lots and lots of green leaves were blown off the trees... which means they are no longer on the trees to turn into their lovely fall colors.

Some of my family lost power but none of the sisterdears lost power. My sister Tina has the day off today as does every other staff member and all students of UNH. One more day of Spring Break. My bil's business flight has been cancelled. My parents are hoping their flight home this week will not be cancelled. Me, too.

Vermont certainly has not escaped Irene's wrath. Widespread flooding. It is just horrible. The last I heard, 10 deaths have been attributed to Hurricane Irene. Many millions of dollars will be needed to repair the damages of property, yet no amount of money can replace those lives lost. How anyone who has ever seen what even the "smallest" and "weakest" of hurricanes and tropicals storms can do can still say "only" a Cat 1 or "only" a tropical storm is beyond my understanding. Truly.

Weather-Watchin' Whitey

Sometimes the worst part of a hurricane is waiting for it. Yesterday I had The Weather Channel on pretty much all day and I would take my painting breaks at 50 past the hour and watch the Tropical Update.

First thing this morning I checked the latest on Hurricane Irene. Yes, even before feeding the babies. Let me tell you, Gandalf, Grayson and Gracie were practically beside themselves with this disruption in their routine! It's as if they were screaming. "FEED ME, MOMMA!", and I was forced to turn up the TV volume. Whitey was an angel, of course. But only because he prefers his dry crunchies to wet food and the bowl wasn't empty.

Here's the highlight of my entertainment yesterday... I tossed $6 worth of drop cloths down and waited a few seconds.

Grayson and Whitey had to check it out very thoroughly before any paintin' could commence. :P

Good boys. Momma loves you. What would I do without you?

Today the weather conditions in New England will deteriorate quickly. I'll be here keeping myself busy. I'll be continuing to prime the hallway, checking the Tropical Updates and praying that Irene passes without causing too much damage and no loss of life.

Hope your day is much better than you expect it to be! Be safe, y'all.

It's only...

I cringe when I hear the words "It's only" when they are followed by "Category 1 Hurricane" or "a Tropical Storm".

And I heard them several times yesterday... from my family. At least my sister finally got to the store and picked up some hurricane emergency supplies... like food and water. I feel better now.

In other news...

Painting is in my weekend plans. I finally picked up a new drop cloth and some cheap-o paint brushes. So I won't have to deal with mineral spirits clean up again if I can get it all primed this weekend.

I am forced to use oil based primer on the woodwork because it was painted with oil based paint. Buggers. But once it's all primed I'll be able to come back and paint over the primer with latex and all will be right again with my world. Well, at least as it applies to Home Improvements. ;-)

And these guys are going to have to move. Sorry, Gray Boys. :P

Weather Dudeology Friday

Am I in the minority when I hear the adjectives and phrases the meteorologists and hurricane experts are tossing out and it strikes fear into my heart and mind?

  • STORM OF THE CENTURY

  • ONCE IN A LIFETIME STORM

  • POTENTIAL FOR EXTREME DAMAGE

  • POWERFUL IRENE POSES DIRE THREAT TO U.S.

Does anybody else think that way too many people seem to have become complacent? Or deaf?

Don't get me wrong. I dearly hope the storm decides to makes a shift to the east or that the storm intensity drops considerably and is merely an inconvenience to everyone on the eastern seaboard. Better yet, I wish that it would miss the U.S. entirely. Unfortunately, I doubt that's going to happen.

So. Just in case it doesn't turn right or drop in intensity, isn't it reasonable to take a few simple precautions?

For the past few days I have been trying to convince the SisterDear who lives on the southern Massachusetts coastline to get to the store for emergency supplies since I first went myself at the beginning of the week when Tropical Storm Irene became Hurricane Irene. Last night I suggested that depending on what the track looks like tonight and Saturday morning that she may need to evacuate inland because of the potential for storm surge and flooding. She dismissed the idea immediately as though I suggested she pierce her nose in 3 places and dye her hair purple and green. And give up red wine forever!

Worried. I am. Prayerfully, of course.

Be safe, y'all.

And now, something completely different

What do you want on your Tombstone?

I actually won't be needing one as I plan to be cremated however I do enjoy reading some of them in old cemeteries. It's all Walt Disney's fault. Who remembers the funny headstones at The Haunted Mansion? The Haunted Mansion Tombstones are actually a tribute to the Disney Imagineers who had roles in designing and building the attraction!

Anyway... whilst perusing the news for updates on Hurricane Irene this morning I came upon a post by WCVB TV Boston which cracked me up before I'd even had my first cuppa coffee.

Here's a few of my favorites.

Hurricane Elena 1985

Cinderella posed a question in yesterday's comments about how to know whether or not to evacuate in the event of a hurricane... and if so, WHEN?

The forecast can change completely in just a matter of a few hours. You don't want to wait too long to evacuate because the roads become clogged with everyone else who waited too long.

I have only had to evacuate once and did so about 36 hours ahead of the hurricane making landfall, but I was only travelling inland about 70 miles. It was 1985. Hurricane Elena. At the time I was living in Tampa. My house was just north of MacDill Air Force Base's front gate and we were surrounded by 3 bays... Hillsborough Bay, Tampa Bay and Old Tampa Bay.

They were predicting 30 foot tidal waves into the bays if Tampa took a direct hit. My house was about 5 houses from Hillsborough Bay and not even a foot above sea level. Needless to say, I wanted to leave much earlier - 2 days earlier - but at the time I was still married to Mr. Stubborn. He waited until the police and fire department came through the neighborhood with their bullhorns telling us we were under mandatory evacuation.
Get Out NOW!

They did not allow us back in until the 4th day after the storm. Bayshore Blvd had been under 5 feet of water for 3 days. There was tons of beach erosion. In fact, the road itself disappeared on our stretch of Bayshore. Fortunately, my house only had some minor damage... the soffits under the roof were blown off and I had a small amount of water in the living room... and other people's miscellaneous lawn furniture strewn all over my yard that they did not bother to secure or put in their garages... Idiots.

[caption id="attachment_1507" align="alignleft" width="604" caption="Hurricane Elena 1985, Category 3"][/caption]

The worst part was that I had a German Shepherd Mama with 8 babies that I had to board up in my kitchen. We could not take them with us. We nailed up plywood over the windows and doors. I filled dish basins and every pot, pan and bowl I could find with fresh water and left out a 50 pound bag of dog food and prayed for the best.

I'll just stop here and let you imagine what my kitchen was like after 4 days.

Multiply that exponentially because you really just can not imagine it.

But they were all thriving and well when we got home!

My kitchen... not so much. :P

NOAA, NWS, TWC

Hello, Irene.

What a difference a day makes. Irene's projected path shifted much farther east and it looks as though my area will be spared a visit from Irene.

I moved to Florida, part of the heart of Worrying about the Hurricane Cone of Uncertainty, about 36 years ago. First of all, let me just say that we are truly blessed to have the technology we have today.

Years ago, hurricanes killed tens of thousands of unfortunate people in their path because they just didn't know it was coming. They didn't have the luxury of becoming complacent and ignoring the warnings as folks nowadays do.

I must say, of all of the forms of media over the past 36 years... radio, local TV, network cable and satellite TV and now Facebook pages... I L♥ve Facebook!

Imagine... An update; concise and succinct. Without any of the commercials, the hype or the hoopla. BAM. There is it. On your wall. With information you actually want and need to hear. It's heaven, I tell you.

I am of the mindset that I am somewhat always prepared. Canned Goods, Frozen Food, Batteries, Matches, Lighters, Water. We also have a Generator. Must be able to keep food cold... and be able to make coffee... if the power is out for a day or a week or more. However when the first warnings of a storm goes out, I get myself to the store. Yesterday I stocked up on a few cases of water and 2 extra weeks of cat food and litter. Even if you are not in the hurricane's path, your food supplier's distribution center and/or roads to your local stores may be blocked due to the storm and they just can't get to you for weeks.

If I am nearer to the center of the cone or directly in its path, I make sure my car has a full gas tank and prepare my home for evacuation. Bring People, Pets, and Pictures, Medicines, Cash, Computers. Oh... and iPhone and iPad. Those last two items were added recently. :P If you have small kids, elderly or other special needs, obviously you must plan accordingly.

Here's the Emergency Supply Kit List from NOAA.

Be a Boy Scout. Be Prepared. It's not that much trouble. I promise.

Excuses, excuses.

I couldn't paint this weekend. Why? Because my drop cloths weren't in the garage like Al said they were. I think he took them to the house he's getting ready to rent.

I was going to run out to Big Lots to pick up new ones as well as about 5 cheap throw-away paint brushes so I don't have to keep cleaning up with stinky mineral spirits. But I didn't. Why? Basically, I was too lazy to leave the house.

I watched a few movies Saturday. Yesterday I downloaded "The Help" to my iPad Kindle app. I read a short time and fell into a deep sleep. I slept like a rock. 3 hours later... I woke up shocked to discover that it was 3 o'clock! Holy moly. I haven't had a 3 hour nap in I don't know when! I guess I needed it.

I blew off the entire weekend without achieving one.single.goal.

Rats.

Today's Sunday Funnies are brought to you by Facebook and Photoshop

Was in in the public rest room - I was barely sitting down when I heard a voice in the other stall:

Stall: "Hi, how are you?"........Me: embarrassed, "Doin' fine!"
Stall: "So what are you up to?".......Me: "Uhhh, I'm like you, just sitting here."
Stall: "Can I come over?" ......... Me: (attitude) "No, I'm a little busy right now!!"
Stall: "Listen, I'll have to call you back. There's an idiot in the other stall who keeps answering all my questions!!"

Saturday Stuff

At the risk of boring you to tears, I'll be painting again this weekend while the cats will be doing a great deal more of this. :P

Hey, at least it's a break from my web site.

I just realized that my parents will be coming home in 11 days! Yay! I'd really like to at least be done painting the hallway before they get back so they aren't tripping over ladders, drop cloths and whatnots. Truth be told, I just want to git 'er done on the oil base primer part! I really hate working with oil base paint and mineral spirits. stinky.stinky.stinky.

And since Aunt Sandee isn't really a facebook fan and may have missed Gracie's updates, I wanted to let you know that she's got a hurty back leg again. I've no clue how she may have hurt it but I'm grateful that other than favoring it and being a bit less animated than normal she has no other symptoms. Her appetite is normal and she is still completely fascinated with her bird-hunting fantasies through the patio screens.

Well, time to fix another cup of coffee and see what you're all up to today! I hope it's fun!

Friday Friends? Sah-weet!

Thanks for re-Friending me on Facebook. Is that a word now? I think it might be a new word in the Urban Dictionary now. Anyway... I couldn't get anyone at the Facebook store to respond to my pleas for help and nothing on the Help Desk actually was of any help at all. So I just took matters into my own hand and created a new page.

The bad news? My original Facebook page? At first I just thought it was BROKE... but now I think it may be one of many people's pages they are using to try out some new stuff on (y'all).

It has a place on the side now called Ticker. There's no longer a "Top Stories" or "Recent News" choice in the top right. When it first started over a week ago most of the posts it was showing me was about 24 hours old. There have been changes over the past week. Here's a screen shot of how it looks this morning.

I really wish they'd quit screwing with it. Didn't anyone ever tell them you can't teach an old broad new tricks?

A Study in White... and Whitey

The Swamp was built in the late 1960's and prior to us it had exactly 1 owner. Apparently, she did not put much stock into updating.

Anything.

In fact, she had very expensive window treatments. Layers and layers, 3-4 curtain rods on every window from ceiling to floor. It was so dark and dreary. At first, my name for The Swamp was "The Mausoleum". Partly because she lived here until she died but mostly because it was so heavy with window treatments and very dark, dreary and depressing.

All of the window and door trim in this house is original, which unfortunately for me means that they were painted with oil base paint. In order to paint them with latex paint I first have to prime them with an oil base primer to give the latex something it can stick to. Y'all.

Once again I have my lovely assistant Whitey to help demonstrate.  Before I began painting...

The white door and window trim, looking anything BUT white...

And after 1 coat of Sherwin Williams Odorless Oil Base Primer... note the door trim just above Whitey's head which has not yet been primed. Still its original ugly, un-white color. Ack.

I l♥ve my Sherwin Williams guys. They make me feel smart about painting. Which I'm not. I'm just enthusiastic.

Kind of like a cat is enthusiastic about helping.

This house has 10 door openings in the hallway alone and each room has at least 2 windows. And closets... Oh my Lord, we have louvered doors galore!

I'll be on this project for some time to come. Come check on me from time to time. K?
A house is not a home unless it contains food and fire for the mind as well as the body.

Skinny House, Copp's Hill Burying Ground

Did you know there was such a thing?
Spite house
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A spite house is a building constructed or modified to irritate neighbors or other parties with land stakes. Spite houses often serve as obstructions, blocking out light or access to neighboring buildings, or as flamboyant symbols of defiance.[1][2] Because long-term occupation is at best a secondary consideration, spite houses frequently sport strange and impractical structures.

Whilst googling 'Tewksbury Hospital' for my post the other day, I googled upon a blog called Creepy-chusetts, Strange-chusetts. After reading a few posts, I added it to my reader. One of the next posts was about Skinny House in Boston's north end.

It's 4 floors! I'd love to live there. How fun would that be?! However, it is a Townhome Rental now so I COULD stay there! It sleeps 5! Perhaps a SisterDear long weekend one of these days? DO click HERE to see the photos of the inside! Too stinking cute!

Oh. It's right smack in the middle of The Freedom Trail and oozing with history!

And as you can see from below's screenshot of the Google Map, directly across the street from Skinny House is Copp's Hill Burying Ground. I googled THAT and discovered that it us Boston's second oldest cemetery.
While most of the people buried in Copp’s Hill are ordinary Bostonians, with some notables such as Cotton and father Increase Mather, two Puritan ministers closely associated with the Salem witch trials; Old North Church sexton Robert Newman who is thought to have hung the lanterns on the night of Paul Revere’s midnight ride; and Edmund Hartt, builder of the USS Constitution.

Guess what's on my list of Things To Do in Boston? ;-)

You Are My Sunshine

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQ9oIIzMrlA]

You Are My Sunshine is a song that's been around for ages (well, the 1930's!) and recorded many times by many artists. It's a sing-along staple in our family. My Dad plays his guitar and we all sing along. 'Sing' may be too generous a word here. At any rate, we belt it out with great enthusiasm! :P

This country sign hangs out on my patio. Years ago my sister Lynda bought one for herself (which is hanging out on her patio) and one for my parents.

About a week ago Lynda asked me to make some wine labels for the wine she and my bil Rick recently made. When my sister Tina saw the wine labels she asked me to design one for her using the words from You Are My Sunshine. It's been my desktop wallpaper since then.

Once again, I shall call upon my lovely assistant Whitey to demonstrate the stretched wallpaper version.

I may have it mounted and framed to hang in my office.

The label, not Whitey. ;-)

Freshening up my office

So. Yesterday.

The day finally rolled around to paint my office. I have always hated the hideous 60's dark paneling. To make matters worse, somebody decided to make the top half of the walls popcorn like the ceiling. Attractive. Not.

My lovely assistant Whitey will help me demonstrate.

After 11 hours... 3 coats of White on the bottom half and 1 coat of pale blue on the top half. I ran out of time and energy.

What I found was that my body was revolting big time... aches, burning pains, cramping...

Oy, the cramping.

And Look how un-white the "white" door and trim paint is.

"I'll get you, my pretty."

"But that day is not this day."

Those last 2 lines were movie lines from movies made about 65 years apart. Who knows them both? :P

And now for more serious matters. I have a prayer request for my Dad, and for my Mother, too, as this has been very difficult for her. My Dad had another episode Friday morning and, thankfully, he did not refuse to go to the hospital this time. They've been running all kinds of tests; another one is scheduled for today. His doctor says surgery is likely. Today's test results will determine what kind and when.

When Dad answered his phone yesterday morning I said, "Hi, ya Pa! I heard you've been causing more trouble!" And he said, "Ya? Well, I'm stubborn, just like you, dear!"

Tewksbury State Hospital, formally known as the Asylum

[caption id="attachment_1388" align="aligncenter" width="692" caption="IMAGE CREDIT"][/caption]

As a kid growing up, Tewksbury State Hospital (or simply Tewksbury Hospital, as it is named now) was rather scary. Actually, the above photo is an abandoned residence on the hospital grounds and it captures that feeling brilliantly.

Tewksbury Hospital (previously known as Massachusetts State Infirmary, Tewksbury Almshouse and Tewksbury State Hospital) was built in 1852 and is still in operation. In fact, my cousin tells me that her mother, my Aunt Barbara, was cared for very well in the later days of her battle with Alzheimer's. It's on the National Register of Historic Places. It was also where Anne Sullivan lived for several years before leaving for the Perkin's School for the Blind and ultimately to become Helen Keller's teacher.

[caption id="attachment_1390" align="aligncenter" width="692" caption="Tewksbury State Hospital - Old Administration Building/ Public Health Museum"][/caption]

I'll stop now, because I am not Linda... I neither profess to be a History buff nor a travel writer. Perhaps one day Linda will go visit Tewksbury Hospital and write you a proper post about its rich history. Linda, they even have a cemetery! Two actually! And yes... the hospital grounds are rumored to be haunted!

Imagine how super creepy it would be on Halloween Trick-or-Treating in that neighborhood?

Today's post was brought to you by the random, hazy memories of my childhood that invariably pop up whilst talking to the sisterdears and Google, through which I can 'go back' vicariously and discover far more than I could back when I was a kid!

Thanks for letting my mind wander! Have a lovely Sunday!

Howdy, neighbor!

Over the years I have seen many bloggers go from Gung-ho blogging to either seriously curtailing their blogging posts and blog visiting (kinda like me!) or they just quit blogging entirely. The causes are usually having reduced time for blogging to reduced interest in blogging... more often some combination of the two.

The amount of guilt expressed varies from one blogger to another. Somehow I rather doubt that Dooce or Pioneer Woman feel badly for even a nanosecond that they have never visited my blog. :P

Cinderella recently did a post apologizing for the inconvenient fact that royal time constraints prevented her from visiting all the blogs to return more than 300 comments who entered to win her $300 giveaway. Not even regular visitors, mind you... just people entered for the giveaway.  Silly Princess!

My suggestion? Think of bloggers and their blogs as people who live in houses. They either live on your street or in your town, state or country, or perhaps they may even live all the way across the globe. Just because one of them waived to you from the vehicle you were traveling in while you were both happened to be out traveling certainly doesn't necessarily mean you will stop by each other's houses every day for a cuppa tea or that you will become bffs.

And that's okay. ;-)

New Insulation. I has it.

First thing yesterday morning a big old truck and a couple guys pulled up to my driveway here at the Swamp. They were here to blow 6 inches of R-something-or-another Insulation into the attic. It's supposed to make the air conditioning 'feel' cooler and the heat 'feel' warmer, all the while lowering your electric bill. They were here less than 45 minutes. Easy Peasy. And it was far less expensive than I expected.

The irony of this was that just the day before my air conditioner froze up. It apparently was low on Freon and needed to be recharged. It happened in the hottest part of the day. Naturally.

You guys? I was wilting. I was melting. I was dying! I could never, ever live without central heat and air again.

Or water and ice in the fridge door.

Life wouldn't be worth living.

srsly.

Dear Mom, we have runned away

I saw the above letter on Funny or Die (the letter from Camp is hysterical!) and it reminded me of a letter so much like this one, only the letter I'm remembering was not written by little Emily. It was written by SisterDear Janice. Janice, being the older of the two of them, wrote it on behalf of herself and our younger brother Johnny.

Janice could likely quote you the entire letter verbatum because the letter still exists somewhere. I don't remember if MotherDear has it in a photo album or a box somewhere or if Janice has it. It needs to be scanned! Anyway, the letter begins,
Dear Mom, We have runned away.

Obviously, they didn't get far. ;-)
